Reports from the trenches of the San Diego beer scene

Beer & Sandals

San Diego is home to some of the finest beers, breweries and brewmasters in the world.

We relish the opportunity to be your companions in navigating these glorious waters.

It’s Pumpkin Time

It’s autumn and time for the pumpkin brews to hit shelves.  We see the expected  such as Shipyard’s Smashed Pumpkin and Dogfish Head Pumkin Ale but are always hoping for something new as we do when shopping for brews in general.  This year we San Diego(ans)/(ites) get something special.

From Alpine Brewing:

“Gather ‘round while I tell you a story about and ale called “Ichabod.” Well, it was about 18 months ago by my recon. We just completed our brewery expansion when we hurried to make our annual fall specialty, “Ichabod 2009.” When time came to get the barrel aged pumpkin spiced elixir ready for bottling we discovered it just wasn’t ready. So, we had no such beer last year. But, we had another 12 months to age this special ale and it will be released on Saturday, October 30th, when doors open. “Ichabod 2009” is a lightly sour, tart pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg ale aged in a mix of red and white wine barrels 1.5 years. Available in 22 oz. bottles only, we’ll only have one keg for the pub, so no growlers. Two heads are better than none…”

From Manzanita Brewing:

“Our second batch of Pumpkin ale is going strong in the fermenting tank.”

And will reportedly be ready in just a few weeks.

So if you’re like me and not too into the Pumpkin Ales but enough to both try something new and support the locals, then head over there and “Get Some”.
