Beer of the week is a feature we will be running, you guessed it, every week.  We will mostly feature local brews, but will occasionally mix in some others.

The first edition will cover Lightning’s Black Lightning Porter.

Style: Baltic Porter

I was on my way to a family BBQ when I decided to stop over at BevMo! and grab some beer.  After picking a couple of beers to compliment my steak, I came across Black Lighting Porter and settled on that as being my dessert.

Black Lightning Porter pours black as night with a nice caramel head.  The aroma was of bitter chocolate and hints of coffee.  Immediately I knew this was a good choice for dessert.  BLP’s taste was also of bitter chocolate, coffee and some smoked wood hiding the alcohol content very well.  Hops played a nice role in both the taste and aroma department as they were definitely apparent but not overpowering.

I learned from their website that they use a mix of 9 different malts to create their naturally occurring flavors,  never needing the added spices and extracts.

I felt that for the price and quality, Lightning did a heck of a job!
